The Wood Is the Story: Cherry, Apple & the Northern Peninsula

FIELD NOTES / 001 • DOOR COUNTY, WISCONSIN

We are not interested in putting a regional logo on a generic pocketknife and calling it craftsmanship. Door County Knife Co. is being developed around a different idea: a useful, American-made folding knife whose wooden handle has a traceable story of its own.

ORCHARD CHERRY

Our proposed first collection begins with Door County cherry. The peninsula is known for its tart-cherry orchards, including Montmorency trees. That orchard wood should not be confused with the larger black cherry trees commonly milled into furniture lumber. If we claim an orchard source, we intend to document the actual source.

Small orchard trees present a real manufacturing challenge: finding pieces with sound grain, adequate dimensions, and the stability required for a precision folding-knife handle. Sourcing, drying, machining, and testing come before any release.

ORCHARD APPLE

Applewood deserves its own place in this company. It is dense, fine-textured, and often carries amber, russet, and reddish tones. It can also move considerably as moisture changes, which means we will need to select stock carefully and evaluate conditioning and stabilization before approving it for use.

The proposed Harvest collection is a design direction, not a product announcement. We have not yet approved a production batch of Door County applewood.

MORE WOODS FROM NORTHERN DOOR

Sugar maple, American beech, and yellow birch are part of the peninsula's northern hardwood landscape. They're candidates for future collections only if we can obtain legally sourced, documented, workable stock. A species growing here does not automatically make a particular board local.

WHAT WE INTEND TO DOCUMENT

Each finished knife should eventually be connected to its wood species, a verified origin or source, a production batch, and its individual edition number. Our proposed releases will be small on purpose, but scarcity alone will never substitute for quality.

We are currently approaching American knife manufacturers, local wood suppliers, and technical advisors. No finished knives are offered for sale yet, and the completely U.S.-sourced manufacturing goal has not been verified. We'll publish actual prototype photographs and confirmed materials information as the work progresses.

The Founders List is open on our homepage for people who want genuine updates and launch announcements—not manufactured urgency.
